Field Hearth and Home Show to highlight Tioga County

Tioga County United Way Executive Director Brian Eldridge and Tioga County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Marte Sauerbrey are pictured with a sign advertising the upcoming Field Hearth and Home Show.

The second annual Field Hearth and Home Show will be held on March 9 and 10 at the Owego Treadway Inn and Conference Center located in Owego, N.Y. The show will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. This year’s show marks the second collaboration of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce and the Tioga County United Way to host the family oriented trade show featuring home improvement ideas and outdoors activities.

Kids are one of the main points of focus for this year’s show. Tioga County United Way Executive Director Brian Eldridge was excited about Bricks 4 Kids, located at 1708 Vestal Parkway East in Vestal, N.Y. Bricks 4 Kids will be setting up activity tables for kids to create whatever their imaginations can conjure out of Legos blocks, according to Eldridge. “It’s not a display, it’s a hands-on activity for kids,” Eldridge said.

Tioga County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Marte Sauerbrey said the show was a chance to highlight and support chamber members and other businesses from Tioga County while also helping the United Way. “We’re a small chamber, but we make a big difference,” Sauerbrey said.

This beautiful carving is an example of some of the artwork that will be on display and for sale at this year’s Field, Hearth and Home Show, March 9 and 10 at the Owego Treadway. This piece was carved by Roger Westgate of the Candor Woodcarver’s group.

She was most excited about the canoes and kayaks that will be on display during this year’s Field, Hearth and Home Show. “It’s what people in Tioga County do when they’re not working,” Sauerbrey said.

Among the sponsors of this year’s show are Chris White Home Improvements, Curtis Custom Woodworking, and Johnson’s Pools and Spas.

Lock N Load Sporting Goods located on Erie Street in Owego, N.Y. is a natural fit for the Field, Hearth and Home Show, which Sauerbrey said grew from an idea to have a gun show in Tioga County and what she said was a “good relationship” with Leadership Tioga. Lock N Load will be providing a home protection device as a prize for one of the show’s drawings, according to Sauerbrey.

Wayne Middendorf, of Middendorf Tractor, Auto, and Powersports, Inc., is providing a chainsaw that is being given away at the Field Hearth and Home event. Everyone who buys a ticket to attend is eligible to win this EFCO Chainsaw, according to Sauerbrey. The 16-inch chainsaw is valued at $239, and is a high end saw, according to Eldridge.

There’s also going to be a Holland grill set up outside which will be used to cook everything from pork loin to pizza during the show. Eldridge said there will be lots of samples for visitors to try when they come to the Field, Hearth, and Home Show. Sauerbrey added that Kozina Kookies and Joe’s Jerky will also have treats to tempt the calorie conscious. There will also be a 4-H Gun Safety Training booth set up offering tips on the proper use and storage of firearms.

Sauerbrey said the proceeds from the show are split evenly between the chamber and the United Way. The chamber will use the proceeds to support its members and the busy schedule of public events, while Eldridge said the proceeds will go to the Special Allocation fund. The Special Allocation fund is used for unexpected needs which arise during the year, like local food pantries that have exhausted their yearly total of aid from Tioga United Way, according to Eldridge. He added that a literacy program and the Apalachin Library have recently benefited from the Special Allocation fund.

Middendorf is a member of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce. Everyone who buys a ticket into the show will be entered into the drawing for the chainsaw.

The cost of the event is $5 per person and children under 12 are free. “These are activities which the entire family can enjoy, so you will want to check out sights, sounds and smells,” Sauerbrey said. She added that this year’s Field, Hearth, and Home Show has expanded to the second floor of the Treadway, and she expects the yearly event to continue to grow.
